Search for PDFs only

Many formal documents are stored on the Web in PDF format. You can limit your searches for these by putting "filetype:pdf" in your Google search string.

For example,
filetype:pdf american civil war
filetype:pdf president clinton speech

Notes don`t have to be boring

Many students feel that good notes should always written in clear handwriting, and the page shoud be well formatted.

Unless you are handing in your notes for marking, you need to remember that they are for your eyes only. You need to write your notes for you - and they can be as messy and creative as you want.

Draw pictures to explain things rather than writing words (a picture is worth a thousand words), use colored pens, write upside down, use arrows to link ideas - anything to help you learn and understand what is going on.

You should enjoy going back to look at your notes, not dread looking at them. As long as you capture the key ideas, it is up to you how you write them down.

Keep track of websites you visit

When you are researching on the web, make sure you keep a track of websites you are visiting. You can either do this on paper, in a Word document, or can use a service like Google Notebook (Link)

This is important because, when you come to write up your report or essay, you will need to add your references at the end. It also helps if you need to go back for more information on something.

How to get definitions of a word fast

If you are looking for a quick definition of a word or phrase, Google has a good way to get this.

Go to Google (Link)
In the search box, type "define:YOUR TERM"

For example,
define:xenophobia
define:united nations

You will get a quick list of lots of different defintions pulled from different sites across the Web. You can then quote these in your essays or reports, referencing the site that they come from.

Get an overview before you begin

Many people are tempted just to use their existing knowledge in their essays and reports - so start planning their essays before they do any research.

But if you don`t really know a subject that well, how do you know what the main sections are going to be? What if the subject is fast changing (any form of technology usually is) - are you sure you really know the current situation?

You should aim to get a good overview of a subject before you begin planning.

An easy way to do this is to go to Wikipedia (Link) and visit the page of the subject your are looking at. Once you`ve read the page itself, then visit the pages of the different concepts that were mentioned (the words should be hyperlinked to their pages) many of which you will not have heard of/understood. Make sure you repeat this with every concept on the original page until you understand everything that is mentioned.
